NLP and Entrepreneurship

“You shouldn’t focus on why you can’t do something. Which is what most people do. You should focus on why perhaps you can, and be one of the exceptions.” This is what Steve Case, co-founder of AOL emphasis when talking about doing business, succeeding in life, setting goals and achieving goals. To think of it, these words have some real insight for an entrepreneur, more so when the buzz word in business world is NLP and Entrepreneurship. After all, so often business owners end up focusing so much on the things that they cannot achieve or what they cannot do that they fail to look beyond the ‘cannots’ into what they can really do.

NLP has usually been associated with personal and business mastery, leadership development, improving sales, and peak performance for athletes, since it helps people to tap in their own resources, so that a person can excel personally and professionally. It helps in boosting your confidence, enhancing your prowess and giving you the ability to achieve your goals. NLP provides lot of tools which entrepreneurs can tap into to help them lead a more fulfilling life, and excel in their business, hence NLP and entrepreneurship has gained lot of traction in recent past, and people especially are willing to explore this aspect for personal and business mastery. Let us look at the different ways in which NLP can be used by entrepreneurs to increase their efficiency, improve the profitability of the business and enable them to lead a better personal life. NLP and entrepreneurship is a growing area, and let’s explore why it is that way:

1.      Improve Self Esteem

Entrepreneurs become successful when they are confident about themselves. The higher their self-esteem, the easier it is for them to explore new strategies for their business. Their confidence also reflects in the persona of the business. Since most of the employees owe their motivation to their leaders, it is important for entrepreneurs to reflect a personality that will motivate their employees.

Many entrepreneurs are bogged down by negative thoughts, bad experiences or unsuccessful attempts at a product or a service. For them to achieve success, it is imperative that they replace the negative thoughts with positive ones and use their bad experiences to turn them into stepping stones for success. NLP and entrepreneurship goes hand in hand to understand the strategies used by successful entrepreneurs to manage this aspect.

2.      Look For Opportunities

When Howard Schultz, Chairman and CEO of Starbucks was growing up, he had never dreamed that he will someday own a business as profitable as this. But what he did know, was to look for opportunities and focus on getting successful. He did not belong to a very rich family and he was the first graduate in his family. In fact his graduation was also earned through an athletic scholarship.

His life story, as narrated in his book “Pour Your Heart into It” is an interesting read which tells you how he focused on the opportunities and made sure he jumped at the right opportunity when they came his way. When entrepreneurs move their focus from the challenges to the opportunities, they can gain more success. Using NLP, entrepreneurs can train their mind to look for opportunities instead of getting pulled down by the hindrances.

3.      Communicating Effectively

If Romeo and Juliet had a better way of communication, then they may have had a chance to spend their lives together. This is why communication is so important in our lives. For an entrepreneur, communication can help you get new clients, expand your business, improve employee satisfaction and it can also help you improve your personal relationships.

The effectiveness of communication can make a big difference. The manner in which you communicate can make or break relationships, augment or damage the reputation of your business and lead to expansion or contraction of your business. NLP techniques can help you communicate effectively with yourself, and communicating with others. NLP programs teach you methods that help in making you sound more pleasant and impactful when talking to others. As an entrepreneur, this can be a great advantage.

 4.      Learning Flexibility

Entrepreneurship requires adaptability and flexibility so that you can embrace positive changes. When Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter had failed in his first start-up company, Xanga, instead of losing hope, he decided to start all over again from scratch. He adapted himself to the situations and worked his way up once again till he got a job at Google and later became the brains behind one of the most popular social media platforms used by us – Twitter.

Entrepreneurs don’t always have an easy job to do. There are times when things may not work as expected. These things must change so that you can succeed and achieve your business goals. This is where you must be flexible enough to accept the changes. With the help of NLP, you can achieve success in your business by learning to be flexible in various situations.  Behaviour flexibility is a key concept when talking about NLP and Entrepreneurship.

5.      Manage your Thoughts and Feelings

An entrepreneur may not always be able to express his thoughts openly all the time. This is why it is important to manage your thoughts and feelings and focus on keeping your thoughts positive. Your thoughts can have a great impact on the way you behave. Entrepreneurship requires you to be at your best when you are dealing with clients or communicating with employees.

Use NLP techniques to make sure that your thoughts are positive so that you can handle conversations more effectively. When you think positively, you will notice that your organization will do better and people will work more efficiently. This is because your sense of positivity flows into your employees who find motivation in your positive attitude.

These are some of the ways in which NLP can benefit entrepreneurs. It is exciting time for NLP and entrepreneurship.  The key here, is to make sure that you as an entrepreneur or potential entrepreneur utilize the NLP techniques in your daily life so that you can succeed. Entrepreneurs have found NLP to be a great way to grow their business. While some people find NLP techniques to be manipulative, in reality it only teaches people how to communicate more effectively and how to explore their abilities to strike the right chord when conversing with others.

Since communication is a must in every business, it is only reasonable to use the right NLP techniques so that you can communicate powerfully and succeed in putting across your thoughts to the others. Depending on how you communicate, you can change the way how people think and behave, and that is a powerful strategy for successful entrepreneurship.
