What is Emotional Intelligence Coaching?

Aditya is an engineer, who graduated from an elite institution in 2012. His mannerism speaks a lot about his upbringing. His politeness, humility, and compassion keeps him totally class-apart. As days are passing by, he is getting popular (within his team) as a leader at his workplace. Even management has begun to notice him for the kind of behaviors (exception client handling, team management, his emotional self management – demonstrating EI Coaching) he exhibits – in the last six months he has not shown a single sign of stress or irritation while performing even the most critical task despite being a fresher.  Enter, January 2020 he stands with 8 years of experience in engineering function across different sectors, and has been a receipient of an award ‘Young achievers ’30 Under 30′ for the year 2019.  At his desk is a book titled, What is Emotional Intelligence Coaching? And there is a flyer on his vision board, how to become an Emotional Intelligence Coach in India with a handwritten text on that from him, ‘This changed my life’……

Interestingly, in these years he was practicing Emotional Intelligence for Self-Coaching, and had started a parallel journey of being an Emotional Intelligence (EI) coach right at the beginning of his professional career. Today, January 15, 2020, he is being invited as a guest speaker to address a gathering of aspirational coaches/young leaders/team managers on the importance of Emotional Intelligence at the workplace. Following are few excerpts from his speech which will answer questions as:

  1. What is Emotional Intelligence Coaching?
  2. What is the way to take up the path of Emotional intelligence Coaching?
  3. Which is the best institute in India to take this up?
  4. What is the actual path to be covered to be an EI coach?
  5. Which is the certifying body?

What is Emotional Intelligence Coaching?

Emotional Intelligence Coaching is set up around emotions – a unique framework of coaching that helps one to understand oneself through self-talk initiated and steered by the coach around one’s emotions in the moment which can be around any stimulus, and regulate oneself by understanding and accepting his emotions. And the momentum actually begins here when one starts to see the world clearly as the internal fog is cleared, and one is in a way better position to drop the judgment hat and wear a superior hat of analysis and evaluation to maintain relationships that matter to one.

Each of us has an Emotional Piggy Bank wherein we deposit and withdraw certain things. Problem arises when we start depositing things in wrong heads, for example – we deposit worry, negativity, low self-esteem, grudges, self- limiting beliefs and withdraw happiness, values that make us who we are.  And this becomes the moment to call for an EI coach, who with her skills not only listens to us actively and empathically but also questions us to be able to see where is our interpretation of any stimulus going wrong or where should we have applied that emotional brake which we missed too.

EI Coaching in India

Coaching is a journey that is led by the coachee and steered for him/her by a coach. Coaching has many benefits, even unexpected, for a coachee and especially when it comes from a professional coach. Coach is a catalyst in the self-exploration journey of a coachee. Emotions have always been important to a social being.  To be An Emotional Intelligence Coach one needs to attend a course that has good content, and is approved by a certifying body, training delivered by good Emotional Intelligence Trainers, and has applications about how to apply Emotional Intelligence at Work. And not to forget here are certain competence which needs to be qualified by an aspiring coach en-route a full-fledged set of situational questions. These questions are based on all the competence in the code of ethics chartered and updated from time to time by different accreditation bodies of Coaching. The whole process is very enriching and significant to go through sincerely.

Always remember that it is your personal competence that you have to work upon first. The surge in demand of professional EI coaches can be well seen in the last decade or so, and especially after being globally hit by this pandemic, people feel the need to undergo a structured journey to unveil themselves.

Well if the experience of EI coaches in fraternity is to be believed, results of clients seen, yes it does. And many benefits have been validated as per the research that manages its wide gambit of gathering data and processing information available at many universities globally, which are researching about Neuroscience, Emotions, and Wellbeing. And the list can go on.

Besides this, on being coached the coachee develops a list of much-required skills like-

  • Understanding self
  • Understanding Others

Studies also indicate that getting coached using Emotional intelligence models, techniques, and tools, increases the productivity, performance of coachee. It also has a direct impact on team spirit and human behavioral skills that the coachee demonstrates later. These skills can turn into a high performer or a high potential. This leads to better chances of promotion and gives higher scope of image building.

And can be customized to as a niche target audience as one needs to.

The most important benefit for oneself is that it can give one an edge to stay calm despite all odds.

How does one know if EI coaching session has succeeded?

Success is a relative term. Majorly it depends on:

  1. Skills of a Coach especially Skill to calibrate coachee and ask the right questions
  2. Attitude of a Coachee to open up with the coach and that too with an open mind
  3. Adaptability of a coach in designing the conversation as it progresses

Paraphrasing as an art is a must to be in coach, this gives the coachee a new insight with his/her own words being thrown at him/her in a clean language but different tonality and words. This empowers the coachee to look at the same visuals from a distance and gain a new perspective.

How does a great Emotionally Intelligence Coaching session look like?

A great session will have

  1. some goals to achieve.
  2. These goals will be prioritized so as to get a breakthrough one by one.
  3. The coachee will enjoy total psychological safety from the coach.
  4. The client will enjoy a good rapport with the coach.
  5. The coachee will have no inhibition in speaking up her mind.
  6. Through powerful questioning coach will help bring the client near to actual reality.
  7. False expectations will be brought to awareness of the client.
  8. The coachee will be able to pinpoint what is that one emotion or club of emotions that are disturbing her and what is the trigger.
  9. Coaching will have no advice, but only exploration so that whatever response comes from the coachee, the coachee owns it with full ownership and accountability.
  10. Counselling, mentoring, and coaching are all different areas.

Qualified and competent Emotional Intelligence coaches exercise the skill of questioning in a very tactful yet sincere manner so that there is no bias playing any role.

Keeping clean language, that is not using any leading or loaded question is the precursor, even when there is a reframing of any meaning it is done in a manner that not only the essence of the matter, but also the facts of the message remains same.

A coachee has to agree and give consent to take the conversation forward since it is a coachee driven process. Coach cannot impose any of his/her interest on the client. The intent of the client to reach that breakthrough also needs to be checked by throwing questions around the willingness of the client.

In case a client is not stopping and continues to narrate his/her story, the coach can interject politely. Coaching is not merely a chit chat, but much more than that.

It is a journey, of unraveling, exploring, understanding, analyzing oneself.

What emotional meaning does a client gives to his/her emotions also need to be checked by the coach and it may also need to be checked with the client.  No assumptions should be made unless explicitly stated by the client.

If a coach has himself/herself undergone a similar experience, let’s say of distress then maybe the coach will get empathetically too attached with the client that it may lead to fatigue owing to close connection, and hence a coach must be careful around picking up the client.

This can be ascertained during the initial coaching conversation itself.
